HANDLING MONEY & TRAVELERS CHECKS WHILE YOU TRAVEL

Try to avoid carrying large amounts of cash while travelling. Use travelers checks where possible and exchange them for local currency as you need the money. Countersign travellers checks only in front of the person who will cash them.

Do not flash large amounts of money when paying a bill. Pay by credit cards or travelers check, making sure your credit card is returned to you after each transaction. If possible don't let the card out of your sight to avoid fraudulent imprinting.

Deal only with authorized agents when you exchange money, buy airline tickets, travelers cheques, accomodation or when purchasing souvenirs.

Do not change money on the black market.

If your possessions are lost or stolen, report the loss immediately to the local police. Keep a copy of the police report for insurance claims and as an explanation of your plight. After reporting missing items to the police, report the loss or theft of:

  • Travellers cheques to the nearest agent of the issuing company.
  • Credit cards to the issuing company.
  • Airline tickets to the airline or travel agent.
  • Passport to the nearest embassy or consulate.

** We've added a Currency Exchange Calculator so you can easily calculate what your money will buy you when exchanging it for the currency of the country you are planning to travel to.

In the weeks leading up to your holiday or business trip, it's worthwhile keeping track of international currency fluctuations as you can benefit by exchanging your currency when the exchange rate is to your advantage.

With large amounts of cash the benefits can be substantial.
