![]() Noumea - New Caledonia's Pacific Island Hideaway
One of the most spectacular pacific island hideaways I've ever had the pleasure to travel to would have to be Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia. This French territory of just over 19,000 square kilometres is located to the east of mainland Australia and has a population of approximately 200,000 very friendly people. The city is served by two international airports, Magenta and Tontouta.
Noumea itself is only a small city, but the ocean liners, luxury cruisers, private yachts and fishing boats which bob along above the vast underwater reef give it the appearance of a spectacular jewel at the center of a floating crown. This is one holiday destination that makes the outside world seem a million miles away. It's stress free and pollution free. The people are friendly, the culture unique and the scenery is absolutely beautiful with magnificent sunrises and stunning sunsets. The standard of accomodation is surprising and varied. There's every type for every traveller and every budget. Choose from bungalows on the beach or 5-star resorts and everything in between. Just 15 minutes by boat from Noumea's Baie de la moselle, you'll find luxury island resorts scattered amongst the islands that make up New Caledonia. However, no matter where you stay in Noumea you won't be spending long in your hotel room as the pacific island aquatic activities and sightseeing tours of New Caledonia are impossible to resist.
